I have a 2012 Audi A6 with only 45k km on it. I have an intermittent fault where the steering warning light goes on and the steering goes heavy. I was told that it's a fault with the electric motor on the Power Steering Rack. The problem is that the motor itself cannot be replaced and I would apparently need to replace the Power Steering Rack it self, which costs close to $3000 and takes a few weeks to get.
Has anybody experienced this problem? Is there an alternative solution? Is there a way to detach the electric motor from the rack to replace or even repair it?

i just got a letter in the mail that a bunch of Audis Can be taken in for free service, if you’re are under 125000 or 10 years

There is an extended warranty just got in mail. Covers C7 platform as well.

Our 2013 Q5 with 66K exhibited the same steering issue last November, we live in Key West. Local mechanic diagnosed the electronic steering rack issue and replaced it. The closest Audi dealer is >3 hours away. The part alone was $2400. I received the extended warranty letter yesterday. There is a Warranty Extension Reimbursement Request Form. Wonder if Audi will reimburse for the work which was done but not at a dealership? Good luck to all!
