Electric Steering Update - Confirmed Fix Now Available
#231
DSR Off
In continuing to track this down and improve the steering in my 2013 A6 (48k8 installed), I have purchased VCDS and turned off DSR. Here is some impressions after that change:
- the wandering disconnected steering is gone - very connected feeling again
- the "slip" when cornering is gone
- seems slightly slower to return to center after turning ("unwind")
- steering slightly lighter on all settings - Dynamic now very good
- still some "notchiness" when cold but goes away once warmed up
- still a bit of a "hump" on center when cold, goes away once warmed up
- created a coding error on the ABS module
Anyone have any experience or ideas on the re-code for the ABS?

Below is the VCDS output for the ABS and Steering Module after the change. There is obviously a coding change I need to make on the ABS module to "match" it to the change in the Steering Module.- low priority errror - level 6
- car operates fine
Anyone have any experience or ideas on the re-code for the ABS?

I just got off the phone with a senior AOA contact I've known for many years. He confirmed with me that a couple of days ago, dealers were informed that a software update for the electric steering issues was due out very soon. He felt that the software update should be in dealer's hands by sometime next week and that it would take about 20 minutes to perform. (Edit: Reports show some dealers appear to have it now and are performing the update).
While he didn't specify which years or models, he said that 167,000 U.S. vehicles will be affected by the TSB. Since he knows I have a 2013 A6, one could presume that all 2012+ C7s and, based on that number, probably other models with electric steering (at least sold prior to MY2014 which may already have the update applied), will be eligible for the update.
I didn't ask if this would be an active or passive update by the dealer but I'm going to guess that it would be performed automatically at the next service. To be on the safe side, if you have electric steering issues, I would recommend that you contact your dealer or when you bring the car in for the next scheduled maintenance.
The good news is, after many months of programming and testing, Audi has hopefully been able to resolve the various electric steering issues that have been reported here at AudiWorld and elsewhere.

I don't recall there was a TSB for this as it was a campaign. There was only one of this type so your dealer should be able to pull your VIN and check if it applies.

Reviving an old thread here, but wanted to post an update to my steering problems on my 2013 A6 in case it helps another owner with similar symptoms.
In the end, the ultimate fix for me was a new battery. Yes, a new battery.
The one installed originally had a bad cell in it and was likely marginal it's whole life and finally started to give me "Battery low. Battery will be charged while driving." messages about mid-year 2016. Trip to the dealer, problem verified, battery replaced on warranty and now I run will all settings back to normal (DSR on, etc.) and the steering finally feels like an Audi.
This is after it had been to the dealer and had the software update, new alignment settings and steering column replacement all in an attempt to cure the problems.
My guess is that with a low voltage, the motors, sensors and electronics for the steering can't do their job properly.

Also keep in mind this I created this thread almost five years ago. Later C7 model years seem to have improved the electric steering designs based on the almost zero complaint posts.
