What is the best aftermarket engine air filter for an A6 3.0 Quattro?

I've used both Mann and Mahle filters, as I believe they generally make the Audi OEM filters.

K&N. Pays for itself in a year or two.

I second this. I had a K&N and at about the 1 year mark the engine was throwing a P0068 code. I had to pull the throttle body to clean out the caked on grease. Switched back to Mann and am problem free.

For about $200 or less if you really search you can go with an Injen full intake setup. Injen retains the factory airbox which can have some advantages like utilizing the cooler airflow of the stock box and retains the factory breather filtering. You get a little more S/C noise/whine but only when you really get on it.

Paired with a tune might arguably provide a little more oomph as well.
