I test drove both as well. First off just so everybody is aware; there is a few thousand dollar price difference, BUT BMW negotiates and Audi does not. I got my $65K 535i for $57K. So for all intents and purposes they were the same price
Both are great cars, and I definitely give the Audi the edge in the engine category. The lag in the BMW was a problem on the early 2011 builds and is no longer an issue. One major disappointment for me was the audis interior. I had read a lot about audis amazing interiors. I wasn't impressed. Cheap feeling leather. Cheap doors. Small nav screen. And it seemed that the dealer only had black interiors. The BMW was much more upscale feeling. Real leather everywhere. Comfort seats are the best in the business. I ended up with an oyster interior which looks amazing with the black headliner
I also preferred bmw's angel eyes headlights over audis LEDs. Everybody is making LEDs now (even Kia) but when you see those angel eyes you know that's a BMW. Very distinctive. And they're standard.
Also I didn't need awd so I decided to go with the 535i. Plus the free maintenance. Both are great cars but the BMW definitely felt richer and more luxurious to me. You really feel it on the highway where it is rock solid

Figured I'd post my experience since I went through a similar decision debating between a 5 series or an Audi A6. My previous car was a 2001 BMW 540 (e39) was totaled after we got rear ended (nobody hurt thank god!). Anyways I went in expecting to buy either a 535 or a 550, ideally I wanted to buy the 535 because the gas milage on my 540 was kind of killing me with the current gas prices lol. I test drove drove the 535 and it felt like slug. After driving my 540's V8 for 10+ years, the tip in delay from the 2012 535 was just brutal. I left the dealership thinking for sure I was going to have to spend a little more and buy a 550.
My wife saw all the high reviews for 2012 Audi A6, and she begged me to give it a try. I moaned, seriously an AWD sports sedan? Who wants anything but RWD? I went to the dealer, and almost left because I actually had to wait like 20 minutes for a sales person. My wife pleaded with me to stay, needless to say, I loved the drive so much I turned around and ordered a 2012 A6. One drive was all it took to turn me from BMW faithful who would have never thought of owning an Audi, to becoming a now very satisfied Audi owner. The A6 is everything I loved about my old 540 without high gas consumption of my old v8.
Hope this helps, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

RUN FLATS! That says it all. After 7 new BMWs since 1999 for the Wife and 5 new Audi's, mine since 1998 I will stick with Audi. BMW customer support sucks, and until you have lived with run flat tires you have not lived, meaning horrible, expensive, short life. Interior on the Audi , way ahead of BMW.
The customer support at my BMW dealer is about the same as my Audi dealer, both are not as good as Lexus. As far as the interior is concerned, the A6's interior does look better, but BMW's feels better to the touch. What sold me on the 5 series' interior is the multi contour seats, they are much more comfortable than the A6's
