So, I tried to search this and wasn't successful off the bat. My specific question is (a) do I need the cable with the RED collar? (I have the blue collar now) and (b) if I get the RED collar, will it show album art with an older ipod? I do NOT have the ipod touch but my older ipod DOES show album cover art on the screen of the ipod itself.
If my dealer won't give me a RED collar cable, can they be purchased?
Thanks!

Red collar is only needed for video, album art is shown with any cable. Make sure the album art is embeded in the mp3 files. All cables can be purchased as spare parts but they are really expensive. I have some chinese no name cables from ebay that work fine for everything but video.

hm...i just did a google search and i've heard i need the red cable for the album art. But if you have the blue cable and it works then clearly they are wrong. Any idea how I would embed the album art in the mp3 files? thanks

Sorry, spoke too soon. Apparently, if you are in the US youdo need the red cable and the right MMI version as well. There is a thread in the A7 section on the subject.

very annoyed, dealer told me that only the blue cable comes with the car, i can order a red one for about $85. Seems excessive for album art but I'm a sucker for gimmicks, so...

I just purchased my car two weeks ago and the dealer swapped out the blue cable for the red one. You do need the red one to see the album art, but I never find myself on this screen. I am either looking at the nav or scrolling through albums or presets. I felt like the hassle to get the red cable was not worth it, after seeing how small the art is and the fact I am never on the screen that displays it.
You can always try the approach with the dealer that the MMI is not working properly and take it in for service. Show them that the Album art does not appear and that you would like for it to be fixed. Since the red cable is needed I am not sure if they will give you the red cable so the MMI will work properly.
