I also heard that, just like Audi, they use a rotary dial for the headlight switch - the bastards.
Seriously, the rotary dial to control car nav and other subsystems is widely used nowadays. If an interface works well, ergonomically, everyone will eventually adopt it. For instance, everyone (except for Ferarri) uses stalks to control the turn-signal indicators, high-beam switch and windshield wipers.

BMW's iDrive was released within days of Audi's MMI. Don't be perturbed.
It's similar to what happened with Apple and the iPod/iPhone/iPad/iMac/Apple TV/MacBook/MacBook Pro/rMBP. Someone innovates. Everybody else sees the light and piles in. At first, they just copy. Eventually, they begin making gradual improvements.
That's why it's important to keep innovating. If you thought of it, someone else thought of it a few days earlier. It always comes down to who executes.
