NAV maps--fresh or stale?

After having the Nav try to route me down several closed streets while ignoring new overpasses (the streets were changed 4 years ago), I contacted the dealer about updating the maps.
At $300 + $140-$280 shop time, my question was....How old is this update? Further, how often are they updated?
The answer seems to be that the updates come in a somewhat random schedule. Some updates have been used for almost a full year. The current one is six months old.
I get it that they need to make money to stay in business. My reaction is that's hard for me to spend money on old information. I'll email the parts guy monthly until a new revision comes out, then pay for an update.
He said that all they do is load an SD card into the system and let it run. So in some ways, they are double billing for their shop time.
It sure would be nice to have a Garmin style system where we could update our Navs with Internet downloads.
Anyway, if you find yourself considering updating your maps, it's worth asking how old their updates are...especially for the price they charge.

They told me it is a 2 step process.
1. They have to download the update to the SD card unique to your VIN from Audi factory.
2. They the have to load that into your car.
Not sure if that is true or they have to hook up your car and link to Audi and download the update directly.
Either way, it takes hours.
