So I was driving normally in my 2012 A6 and the Parking break malfunction indicator light comes on. I stop the car safely when I can and try to engage and release the parking brake, but the light remains. Now after a while a switched the car off and started it back up and the warning light is gone. I never use the parking brake, is there any known issues with the parking brake.

your brake pads may need replacing. did you get a brake pad warning light? it could be your front or your rear pads.

I did not get a brake pad warning light. Car has only 9500 miles on it, not sure if brake pads need to be changed as such low mileage.

There are no known issues with the parking break. It would appear your A6 is still under warranty. So, may be you should have the dealer check it out.
