To add to my previous post (since I cannot edit), you can also take the inverse and calculate cost based on range...
If I buy 1000 gallons of fuel on the same day I own my car how much farther can I get with a TDI vs TFSI on those 1000 gallons... and at today's prices of 93 octane vs Diesel.
And between the two cars, how much more does it cost to go x% further?
Your baseline is going to be 1000 gallons.
3.0 TFSI = 22mpg combined
TDI = 29mpg combined

Its based on 12k miles. I barely do 5k a year, so for me it will be even longer.

Exactly. Due to depreciation, any new car is a poor choice for a monetary investment, especially higher priced models. If resale value is an overriding priority, a nice, popularly priced, mid-range family sedan around $30K or so would likely be a better option. If considering a highly engineered, performance oriented, luxury car ownership experience, resale value should be quite a ways down on the bucket list.
