I have updated many Audi's (A6's & A7's mainly) to enable VIM. As GrapeKing mentioned, you need VAG to do it.

What information are you looking for that you are not finding?

UPDATE: when searching for it search for "VIM" (most people are abbreviating the phrase)

For us newbies, can you explain what we really need to know about Vag-Com?? Obviously, it's a very popular thing on the blog, but when I first ventured here, I had no idea what it was. All I really know now is that it's PC based software (from Ross-Tech I believe) that allows you to access the cars brains; and modify code to allow the car to do "extra" things. But what happens when you take your car in for service? Are you nullifying your warranty?? And what about all the Vag-Com get-togethers? Do these folks modify your car if you can't do it yourself? Seems like a cult'ish thing going on and I feel clueless. Please help me to make my car smarter.

VAG-COM is a software and cable manufactured by ross-tech, you need the cable and VCDS software, there are ebay and knock off cables but these do not have the key in the cable and won't have access to the full vcds software, long story short you need a genuine cable to do mods. any vag-com mods should not void your warranty unless the mod was the cause of the problem. when you take your car into service none of the mods will be deleted unless they update software and you may not lose all your mods, just depends on what is updated. VIM is an easy mod, just make sure you reset the MMI after completing the mod. if you're close to northern virginia i can help you out as i have the cable.

most independent repair shops have this, mine did. I did all the Vag mods I wanted and when I went to the dealer for my first maintenance, they reset everything! idiots.

Regarding Vag-Com and the warranty, have run Vag-com mods for many years in my C5 and never once has the dealer mention the fact I have done so, or altered my mods. IMHO there is little to no risk in this area.

True as long as Vag users exercise caution, know what they're doing and avoid making changes not documented elsewhere (unless they're Vag-Com experts). Dealers frown upon having to reload software modules and will justifiably charge to correct systems screwed up by owners making erroneous changes.
