Video resolution and type on SD card

I am having trouble getting video to display in full screen when trying to play off SD cards ( I have done VIM mod so that's not the issue). I have plenty of experience in making videos in all kinds of formats but can't find the size that will fill the screen like a DVD will. Whenever I choose Widescreen or other it doesn't change the size at all, leaving video at best 75% of the full screen.
Could someone please post the resolution and type (.mp4, avi, mpeg, etc) that they are using that will fill the screen in its entirety.
Thank you!

I have had the best luck using the following settings. I use Freemake Video converter but I'm sure you could use RipBot or whatever other software. The settings are
Container: AVI
Video Codec: MPEG4
Frame rate: Original to source (23.976)
Bit Rate: 1800 (2000 max allowed)
Audio Code: MP3 @ 48k 320 kbps
The source is the original DVD or BluRay. Hope this helps.
