Default What oil off the shelf?

I was going to do my oil change at 5k myself and use dealer for the 10k service. What can I buy off the shelf that is in spec? My resources are Nappa, Autozone, and Walmart.

Thanks!

Mobil1 Full Synthetic 0W40 for me. Sometimes I wait until I find it on slickdeals. They have it on sale for $20 for 5qt if you buy online and do store pickup at Walmart even if I am a few months away.

Mobil 1 has rebate deals in the spring and fall. $12 off the five quart container up to two. I buy at Walmart and get the rebate. Makes for a cheap oil change.

Wal-Mart has Castrol Edge 0W-40 European Formula: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-E...-5-QT/35931146
or 5W-40: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-E...5-QT/145736795
readily available for $27.47 for 5 qt. Both meet the VW 502 00 spec, but you should get the 0W-40 if you live in a cold climate.

Castrol Edge is my new go to oil after Mobil reformulated their 0W-40 oil. It's now almost a high 30 weight and shears down quickly to 30 weight. The Castrol Edge stopped a lifter tick in my Porsche Boxster.

I don't normally do my own oil changes, but when my car needed a little bit of oil I put in Castrol Edge Audi OEM oil. It has the VW 502 00 Spec on the back, and is the recommended oil for this engine. Im sure any 5W-40 would work, but I went with the recommended one. I got mine from FPC Euro.

For the most part, if a supplier of engine oil meets Audi/VW specification which is VW 502 00 it is considered an oil that can be used.
Here's a list of Audi/USA recommended oils:

there is always a lot of different opinions on oil. I use Liqui Moly. Motul is good. Castrol Edge OE Professional is supposedly made in Germany, but Castrol Edge is made in the US. That makes a difference to me, as Europe has very different requirments for their oil than the US does. My dealer reps strongly recommend the Liqui Moly. My understanding is that Mobil 1 used to have very well made synthetic oil, but after they lost a lawsuit against another manufacturer they really dropped their standards. They sued another company for calling their oil a true or 100% synthetic because it did not use enough real synthetic properties in it. The US Courts dropped the suit so Mobil and other US manufacturers had to do the same in order to compete price wise. Oil made in Europe still has to meet much stronger requirments. Anyway, that is what I was told. I have found that it is virtually impossible to find the real truth or the real properties of anyone’s oil, it is kept as a big secret, but I have read that synthetic oil made in Europe is a better oil than US oil in many places. For the extra few dollars, it is worth it to me to put the better oil in my Audi. I also change it every 5k.
