I mounted it to the 2 screw holes through the middle of the bracket and the plate fits inside that. I forgot what screws I used but they are pretty standard.
Pretty sure:
- those threaded inserts are for the license plate holder (2 threaded screws near the bottom of the holder). They end-up being hidden by plate on very front.
- they intended to make 3 or more different sized holders (USA, Japan, European [wide], etc.)
- the license-plate attaches to the holder (only)
My new A4 has license plate mounting nuts similar to the OP’s. Is it possible to remove these and the small surrounding plastic leaving just the grille bars, or are the mounting nuts part of the overall molded plastic grille? If not removable, is there a trim piece for an A4 that covers the nuts?
According to my dealers Audi Parts manager, Audi didn't make/design US front plate holders for this gen A6. The screw holes align to the Euro plates, which means US plate holes don't match up and fall 1/4'' beyond the Euro holes. I just went to AutoZone and got both these, and a pack of assorted automotive screws, then tried both out and picked the one I liked that I thought looked better on the car.
