I bought a 2018 Audi A6 55TFSI about a week ago. This is my first Audi, so I wanted to ask if this kind of engine ticking sound is normal? Is oil consuption normal for this engine or should I be concerned? The mileage of the car is 87500 km. The oil change was 400 km ago. Video:
On the oil consumption issue you will find, as with any engine, that the level will fluctuate from reading to reading. Would not be concerned and Audi's own guidance is that anything in the range of 0.5l per 1000m is within operating tollerances.
My 2020 A6 Allroad started having a "ticking" sound on cold startup (just barely louder than normal sounding). I attributed it to the fuel pump or injectors and the noise went away after 2-3 minutes of driving.
Took it to the dealer after about 200 more miles of the sound for a standard oil change. They found metal in the filter, dropped the oil pan and found more.
I was at 3.5 years and 42k miles, or JUST inside warrantee.
Dealership pulled the whole engine and put in a new one under warrantee. They told me it would be more work to determine the root cause and that Audi just instructs for a complete replacement.
$38k later in labor and parts (so they tell me), I have a new engine and no sounds.
Dealership was amazing, but this certainly does not inspire confidence...
The videos above sound "normal" to me, but my car was the same "normal" sounds, just slightly louder on cold start. Dealer said they had 3 other cars with a similar issue, though they all had 60-70k miles. All required complete replacements, but all were also from the same build month. Possibly a bad batch of engines or assemblies, who knows. Audi did not delve further.
I have really liked the 55TFSI, but I am thinking about selling the car off before too many more years.
