Default Winter Tires

Hi all - I just purchased a used 2019 A6 (and traded in my 2013). I am thrilled so far.

The car came with the 20" Sport package with 255/40 tires. The winters around here can be rough and I wanted to know other's experience with winter wheels.

The two OEM models are -
- NPN071087_A --- 19 in wheels with 245/45R19 tires
- NPN071088_A --- 17 in wheels with 225/60R17 tires

The 17 in wheels are cheaper, and with a larger sidewall - so it would seem to make the most sense to get those (since the pot holes around here can be nasty). Is it a problem moving from 20in to 17in wheels/tires ?

Any non-OEM alternatives people would suggest ?

thanks!

Do you know a 17" wheel is going to bolt up and clear the brake calipers? I looked at Tire Rack and don't see any 17" wheels offered for a 2019 A6.

If you pull out your Owner's Manual, there's a section on wheels/tires/inflation pressures near the end of the book. You'll see various alternate size tire/wheel combos listed there.

Thanks - just checked and the smaller wheels are not listed in the owner's manual so I may need to go with the bigger ones. The smaller ones came up on the Audi website - so I will obviously double check with the dealer ...

OK, you are correct, that definitely shows the 17" fitting your car. Find out if they guarantee fitment...

If you are running dedicated snow tires during the winter, I'd get the smaller wheels because the tires will be cheaper and you'll be more insulated from pot holes. Also, I'd also stick w the audi wheels, it's easier because you will be able to use the same lug bolts. After markets do not typically use the ball type lug nuts audi provides and it's just something else to keep track of. Also, if your car has the tire pressure monitoring with the units within each wheel, don't for get to get those too.

new guy here--I thought the TPMS system relies on the ABS system so there are not separate TPMS sensors in each wheel...? I've owned VWs before and that was how they worked

thanks

Audi has booth the abs and tpms sensors in the wheels - depends on the car. The abs is more common, i can't recall off hand which cars have the wheel sensor tpms, i think it is mostly S and RS models.

It depends on the model, but Audi used a wheel mounted TPMS sensor from about 2005 to 2010. They then switched to inferred TPMS via the ABS system. Then, a year or so ago they switched again back to a true wheel-mounted TPMS. There might be some models that didn't participate in either switch but that's my general understanding.

Easiest way to identify is probably check the display and see if has a readout for pressure or not.

Thanks all! As a follow-up. The smaller wheels only fit the 45 TFSI and would not fit with the larger wheels as uberwgn suggested.

The tires/wheel packages at TireRack are about half the price as the Audi NPN071087_A winter wheel/tire package (with an overwhelming selection to choose from).

My display does not include tire pressures - and only +/- acceptable pressure so I assume the tire pressures are estimated ?

https://www.motortrend.com/features/...ssure-sensors/

Some of the winter tires at Tire Rack are listed as "run flat" which I know compromises performance but I'm not that worried about that in the midst of winter
