$5 for nitrogen tire inflation- yeah or nay
OK, went to Tire Warehouse in NH, and ordered four Conti Extreme Contacts and the dude wants to sell me nitrogen inflation ($5 tires*$4 = $20) saying better fuel economy, increased tire life, etccc.
Anybody do this?
The price includes balance and mounting, but would you recommend a WHEEL ALIGNMENT too?

Well they tried to do the same thing to me in South Africa. We use Nitrogen in Aircraft tiers to stop any water vapour at high altitudes form freezing.Personally i think its a scam when they try and put it in Cars

There is some thoughts about the performance elements of Nitrogen in tires...
The "advantages" of nitrogen that I have heard include 1) lower weight at the desired presure and 2) less variability with changes in temperature.
Okay, while there may be some truth to that, here are my thoughts.
1) Okay, you might save a bit of weight, but the real weight is in the wheels and tire itself. Shaving ounces or maybe a pund or so, okay, but wheels/tires weight a ton already, so not much performance gain.
2) Everyone should be checking their tire pressure anyway for proper inflation, air or nitrogen, at least once every other week. At $5 a pop to inflate the tire with nitrogen, where do you go when you need to add some air? I'd rather stick to the old air compressor, which is available at just about every gas station, or at home if I hook up my neighbor's compressor.
In the end, to each their own. If you feel like spending another $20 on air, which should be free, go right ahead...

also, the benefits are at high temps...
Unless you are racing, your tires won't get to temperatures that are high enough to show much benefit in added stability.
I'd save my money. It's basically a scam.

Nay unless you are going to the track
Compressed air has moisture in it so an accumulation of moisture can expand when the tire gets heated up at track temperatures. That means there will be a significant pressure difference between cold and hot tires. With nitrogen there is no moisture so the difference between hot and cold is smaller.
Even so, most people run regular air in their tires at the track and deal with the moisture. Nitrogen has marginal to no benefit for street cars.

Nitrogen in tires
I god it for free from Costco about 1.5 year ago:
1. I like what tire pressure is not changing due to tempreture drop...
2. About fuel economy - my car loves the gas and nitrogen is not going to change that...
3. You still can use air compressor if you need it...
