Default '02 2.7 coolant leak? Q about expansion reservoir. Is the hose from the top rear of the....

reservoir near the cap just a coolant overflow hose? It's not shown in the Bentley coolent hose layout diagram, and it apparently just disappears into that rat's nest behind the engine and beneath the reservoir, and may be the source of my coolent leak dripping at the engine/tranny interface. Any BTDT insight greatly appreciated.

Default How old is your coolant reservoir?

I am now on my third coolant reservoir. I had the stock one on there when I purchased the car. Then that one had a crack on the under side of it. Replaced it with one from PureMS. I thought it was OEM but sure enough I was wrong and the coolant reservoir had quickly died. Ended up with a crack on right side. Then I ordered an OEM part from WorldImpex and it has been working fine since then. No leaks and strong as the first day I bought it.

One had a visible crack, the other one had a very large hidden crack near the bottom of the tank on the underside where it curves around.

I would check the container first. Just take all of the screws off and examine it with your hands feeling to make sure there are not any cracks.

Default Apparently it is the original one. No cracks or leaks but is stained a blackish color....

makes it hard to determine fluid level without opening the cap. You didn't/couldn't answer my Q?

Default Yes that's an overflow. If that's dripping could it be your cap?

The design is that if the system overpressurizes the cap will lift and the excess runs down that pipe onto the ground.

If this is really the source of the leak it could be due to :

Overfilling the reservoir (common)

Leaky ie faulty cap

Other fault such as overheating or (shudder) head gasket failure leading to overpressurizing of the cooling system.

Default Yes, it's overflow. Inspect the tank. They get cracks in the plastic and leak. Just replaced mine.

Default Coolant cap, cracked res, or leaky T-fitting just ahead of res. Worst case...

...it could be the after run (aux) coolant pump. Check my signature and search for further info on how to diagnose/replace.

Cap was the problem. Replaced the O-ring on the press relief valve that seals to the ID of the res.

Default Update: The subject hose is not reservoir overflow, but goes to the rear water manifold...

Reservoir overflow is thru an internal passage within the reservoir and out the bottom of it. So I still have a leak somewhere at the rear of the engine. Suspect something like a loose hose clamp on a heater hose, or? Must pressurize the system to find it. Any BTDT ideas?

Rear of the engine? Ah... after-run coolant pump. That's common.
