02 A6 Avant | Overheating Issue
Seeking Advise:
My A6 is overheating after driving it for about 10 miles.
~ Timing Belt and Water pump was changed 27,000 miles ago |
~ No leak from the reservoir
~ No sign of coolant leak anywhere
~ Auxilliary fan kicks in when it reach the normal running temp (middle)
~ Changed the thermostat but with the same behavior
What else could it be?
A.) Temperature Sensor?
B.) Do I need a radiator flush?

Need more detail.
By overheating I assume you mean running not, versus boiling over.
*** Running hot
When does it overheat? On the highway? Around town? Stuck in traffic?[/QUOTE]
*** It overheat around town, highway, stuck in traffic | All of the above. It will reach the normal running temp then the auxilliary fan will kicks but the warning light kicks in too!

While you may have other issues, I would first make sure that your coolant tank cap is tight and the tank has no cracks. A slight leak is enough to get the temp up and you may not see the leak. Cracked tank happened to me on a BMW and a Saab many years ago.

this is still pretty vague. Slow down and describe what happens, how quickly, where the temp gauge goes to, etc.
If you have truly over-heated, as opposed to simply getting hot and then turning the car off before it over heats, as you should, you may have already done damage to the alloy head. We'll hope not.
You might begin thinking T-stat though...

Good on you! That stupid O-ring was leaking on my 4.2.......nothing wrong with the sensor, the O-ring failed after 10 years and 138K miles....
