Hello all, I am having trouble with my 3.0 when I first start up. It happens after sitting min of 2hrs. On start up, the noise is like when you first start up a diesel engine. It goes away after the engine idles. I have replaced the oil check valves to the cylinder heads, ignition coils and plugs. It appears not to be valve lifters cause it does not have a high pitch sound, more like lower end noise.
Since it has 90K on it now, I was planning on doing the timing belt will all the pulleys and wp.
I like to know if others have the same problem and what you might have done.
It puzzles me that for the last model prior to new model, there would be any problems.
Hope to hear some suggestions.

..presumably you are asking cayman2k....
but i've heard people claim to fix it by going from thicker to thinner and from thinner to thicker. Honestly, i think the act of changing it is the common thread :-)

Great to hear from you guys!!
Yeah, I have changed the oil several times, noise still there. I have used both syn. and conventional oils... running both via 5w30...thinking of moving up to 5w40. I live in the east coast and the weather has no bearing from what I see.
It's sunday so I will change the oil to thicker grade and see if I am going to drop some loot on lifters... I have audis with both solid and hydr and just weird to see this happen on this newer one. Even my 200 TQ rolling at 250K+ sounds better.
The few seconds on start up do point to lifters but the non-high pitch noise and short duration between start ups ( now hearing it just after 30mins engine shut off) is hard pressing me to thinking lifters. The knocking noise goes away quick, short enough for me not to be able to put probe to listen.
? Is everyone running on higher Octane gas, 86+

a 3900 lb car with 300 hp.
May be its because I have been around motorcycles too long, but adding 80 hp and 80 ft pounds to my 3600 lb pound beast aint gonna make it "fast".
OR may be my definition of fast is different.

BTW All, It's been some time since I updated on my progress if you want to call it that. I did replace all the lifters. Bank #2 did have bad lifters ( soft ). I even replaced the connecting rod bearings, which I did see wear at 100K.
But, the noise is still there on start up. After a few revolutions, the noise is gone.
At this point, I am looking at replacing the camshaft adjustment valves. I see there was a tech bulletin on it.
So we shall see, I am just getting tired of getting my hands dirty and not getting any success on this besides replacing worn engine parts.
I guess I still love my old straight 5 cylinder motors. The true Audi cars in my book.
But I will see and update.

10 bucks says the oil was too low at one point (not low enough to trigger a light but enough to slightly starve the lifters) and now the lifters are not primed all the way... best way to check is remove the lifers and see if they are spongy... if they are, thats what is causing the diesel noise... if the lifters are hard the problem lies elsewhere... but like i said id bet money it was the lifters, 9 out 10 cars that would come in with this problem were because the lifters had lost oil pressure at some point
