If this was the case, is a repair called for, or is it OK to leave as is? My 2004 A6 3.0 has this "diesel" sound for a few seconds after starting cold, and has since I bought it 27,000 miles /2 years ago (it now has 99k miles), but every A6 I AUDItioned at the time seemed to have this same sound (I was only looking at cars with 50k+ miles).

10 bucks says the oil was too low at one point (not low enough to trigger a light but enough to slightly starve the lifters) and now the lifters are not primed all the way... best way to check is remove the lifers and see if they are spongy... if they are, thats what is causing the diesel noise... if the lifters are hard the problem lies elsewhere... but like i said id bet money it was the lifters, 9 out 10 cars that would come in with this problem were because the lifters had lost oil pressure at some point
