look for oil leaks on the valve cover.
drive the car around for a while and make sure the transmission shifts smoothly. no slipping ect..
listen to the cars turbos when your driving, there shouldnt be any dentist drill sound.
and if its got 100k def. check the service records timing belt, tranny fluid change ect...
if i were you and the car checks out to be ok once you drive it, take it to a shop and have a mechanic look at it. it will cost a little bit, but can save thousands of unexpected surprises in the future & $$$
also take it to a autozone and tell them you have a check engine light that goes on and off and they will scan it for codes for free.
good luck the 2.7 is a great vehicle

this is what the turbos will sound like when bad, basically at any RPM under load they will make this noise. on a normal car when you mash the pedal you will get a whistle as the turbos spool up, totally normal.
trust me you WILL know if it is making the dentist drill sound as it is NOT faint and it is NOT mistakable

You should be able to find an 02 or 03 S6 with <100K miles for $14K.
