16" Spare Tire Well for 17" wheels

I changed my A6 3.0 16's to 17's and have a 17" spare as well. I tried to put the spare in but it would not go in. Is it not possible to have same size spare. Any recommendations would help thanks.

trim the plastic around the back of the spare tire well. I have a 17x7.5 in mine

Is there a height problem? Does the stock rim and tire now fit with no other hungup?

fits perfectly. My 17x8 with 245/45-17 in my 2000 car did not fit as well, and was about 1" too high

and 1" too tall

Speaking of which....

I took your advice about the spare tire lock down screw thing from MY 2000 car thinking it would hold the spare down on my '03. Uh-uh. Too short. I don't think it moves around much but just knowing that it's sitting in the well unsecured bothers me. Any suggestions?
