may have slightly different specs for an approved or recommended rim, but for the 255/40-17 or 255/35-18, approved rims are 8.5-10" wide for the tires I've checked. This is sensitive to tire profile, and the taller 255/45-18 does use 8.0-9.5" rims. When in doubt, check the tire manufacturer's web site for recomendations for the specific tire and size.
For maximum performance, you'd generally use the maximum width approved for the tire, and I have no idea why Audi often uses wheels narrower than the minimum specified by the tire manufacturers. At best, expect less than optimum wear and performance; at worst, early tire failures could result.
BTW: I retired after 34 years of involvement with the tire industry, and I'm glad to see my original A6 Tire Options post has hit 2400 views :-)
