Default 1st bad intake, 2nd bad ECU, 3rd bad left head...WTF

2001 A6 4.2 -- 71k...babied from day one. I have a fluttering noise at 1100 rpm kinda metallic sounding...See subject for dealers BS. Still diagnosing the issue. ANy ideas on this sound..Car drives normal with no loss of power. Take off hte cover and the noise really gets loud. They replaced the intake and cam seal adjuster. Now they say its the ECU? Yeah right. Because a non mechanical computer chip makes a metallic sound.???Who knows..Other guys think its the head. Its not a rocket motor its a V8..Strip off the glitz and its a simple motor. Any ideas?

I have a bad ticking noise coming from my engine (rear, sounds like my tensioners are going out.)

Default I can usually only hear it at idle. The rest of the time, the engine revving overcomes it.

For awhile I thought it was coming from inside the intake (i.e . the intake runners loose inside, or something like that.) But, it seems louder at the rear of the engine. I also thought that accessory-belt tensioner noise was adding to it, since I have replaced the belt but not the tensioner. I have yet to disqualify that. BTW, I am at 124,000.

Default No dealer or Indy diagnosis..That sounds exactly like my problem. The ...

dealer said they thought it was the intake too and replaced it..Still the noise.

Default So did they check the tensioners? Or just the intake? Hmmm..valvetrain perhaps? (cringe)

My sister has a vid. cam. Mybe I can borrow it and make a clip of the noise. Other than that, I don't know what to tell ya. I am also eager to get rid of that noise, and my low idle problem (I posted on the 4.2 engine forum, perhaps you should as well.)

Default I posted on the 4.2 forum. They changed the intake and...

I don't knwo if they checked the tensioners. They suspect the valvetrain, but which part is beyond me. Obviuosly beyond them as well. I got their best people working on it after I made a stink. Only owned the car for 5 months

Default Not knowing what's wrong suxx, doesn't it? I have been tempted to take out a small loan and do a

complete engine rebuild (w/ JE custom forged pistons and Crower billet H-rods, in case I ever go with forced induction.) But, I have yet to decide on that... Plus, that is quite a task for a lazy a** like me
