Here's a link for changing the transmission fluid on an A8, but it's pretty much the same for an A6. Take a look at the picture of the bottom of the transmission pan with the drain and fill plugs. If the plug you removed was one of those, then you drained your transmission fluid. The engine oil drain plug is a 19mm bolt IIRC.

Given what you've described, however, I think we're all betting that you drained the transmission fluid.

tranny fluid begins life a dark cherry black/red, and then gets darker. It drains from the tranny case.
The motor oil comes out from the pan. That's the flat metal thing, obscured behind the plastic belly pan, nearly at the very front of the car.
The Audi's motor, the pan being the bottom of the motor, is fully in front of the front axle. Which is why Audi's are so tossable and exhibit minimal understeer ( sarcasm alert).
The drain plus is a 17mm nut, with about a 25mm threaded part(e.g.: it is reverse - smaller head than thread) and comes out the side edge of the pan, near the driver's front. If you drain the oil, then check its level, you wont have any on the dipstick.
The tranny fluid OTOH is drained from various places, depending on whether its a manual or a slushbox. Typically they are rather large allen-headed nuts. There is no dipstick for ATF ( or, for that matter, for gear oil).
Yet a 3rd drain exists, fot he final drive fluid, shared by the front diff and the center torsen. Thsi too is an allen, typically on the SIDE of the trans housing.
My guess is you now have 9 quarts of oil aerating, and are down 3-4 qts of ATF.

so it is, thanks alot jagmaj! you're the first person to help out and not make me feel stupid at the same time lol.
i'm used to working on fords and chevys not euro cars, so the tranny fluid being black is rather strange to me.
everyone makes mistakes though and now i know one thing not to drain...thanks everyone.

No need to insult the guy...at least he's humble enough to come looking for help. Albeit a little late. ![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I suppose our first question should of been did you remove the shield under the engine to drain it?
Let us know how it turns out.
