Yeah, the plugs are due for a change and I just wanted to make sure I had everything I needed to replace before ordering parts. Is there an easy way to check a bad spark plug without actually swapping it? And am I right in assuming that if one of the power stage output/ignition control modules or the fourth cylinder coil pack had been bad that swapping them would have immediately put out a new code on ignition?

You would have to clear the code to see if it re occurs.. I have 91000 miles on my car and none of these things have failed.. so I can assume if you use the Original NGK plugs your case should be solved... Just a guess at this point.. I think the Ignition is not a weak point in this car at least..

You're right, mine are all bolt on and are not interchangable with the push in type. I pulled my fourth cylinder coil pack (which was a Beru) and when I went to get it replaced at the VW dealership, the mechanic told me that the older bolt-on Hitachi packs never fail and that the problem would be the Power Stage Output module on top of the airbox.
So I went back and swapped my fourth cylinder (driver's side, closest to the radiator) coil pack with the fifth (one behind it). And the trouble code was still for the fourth cylinder. So then I took both Power Stage Output modules and swapped those and yet, I still get the same trouble code.
What else could it be and is there a better way of testing for it? Or am I just doing something horribly wrong?

If you swapped the POSs did you clear the DTCs afterwards?
