2.7T Proper Oil Level?

I have never seen an oil dipstick reading of greater than halfway between min and max in the two 2.7Ts I have owned. This includes dipstick checks made immediately after the 15K mile service (and oil change) on my 2000 2.7T and the day after purchase of my (new) 2001 2.7T.
Is the proper fill level for a 2.7T halfway between min and max? Some other level? Or is there some trick to taking accurate dip stick readings (beyond cold engine and level surface)?

is OK, but you should add a little if below. Touching the plastic above--is too much, remove about 1/2 qt if touching it by 1-2mm. If only reaching the lower plastic, add 1/2 qt- 1 qt depending on how low. Hashed-hatched, whatever, area is best....
