2.7T Rough Cold Starts & ?Coolant Temp Sensor

OK, I've read a lot on here about fellow 2.7T owners having the coolant temp sensor replaced to fix really rough running for a short time after a cold morning start. This, of course, does not generate a fault code. At the dealer today, told them the problem and requested that fix - they refused, saying they couldn't verify the problem (yes, they have had an opportunity to have it overnite for a cold start), meaning there was no fault code stored (duh!).
I requested the intervention of the regional rep who said, no, that's not a problem on the 2.7 (only a no start problem on the 2.8), but AoA is aware of the problem and just issued a fix this week which involved pulling the ECM, sending it in for reprogramming, and then reinstalling (which of course means I'm out a car for a few days).
Questions:
1) For those of you have had the sensor replaced, did that definitely cure the problem?
2) Has anyone heard of this new fix? Does it sound reasonable
3) Assuming the ECM re-program "fix" is right, is there any logical reason why AoA couldn't just have a re-programmed ECM sent to the dealer, to swap out for mine (thus avoiding 2 trips, and a few days without the car). Seems the current proposal is to the customer's disadvantage, and only maybe a slight AoA advantage, if any, and my idea would seem to be a "win-win". But I'm asking because I freely admit that my understanding of auto repair is stuck back in about 1974!
Many thanks for your input...

Yes it did cure my problem. I had started noticing the same problem acting up again and started worrying that the coolant sensor had crapped out again, but it must have been bad fuel (it still was 93 Octane but at a different station). I put in a tank of Sunoco 94 Octane and the car runs great again. So much for the theories of lower Octane
