Default 2.8 vrs 2.7t Pros and cons?

I am looking for my next project A6, I have found 2 cars that both need about the same amount of work done to be drivable. one is a 99 A6 2.8 the other is a 2000 A6 2.7t, both cars are also about the same price, I can get the 99 for $1500 it has new tires and the 2000 will need tires soon and it's $1700 and it is also 3 hrs away so cost would be a bit higher. but needless to say both cars are CHEAP and well worth it. But KBB lists the value of the 00 2.7t as less then the 99 2.8 why is this?? I plan on driving this car for anywhere from 1 month to 2 yrs, Ya just never know with me, I like to piddle with Audi's, both cars will need the T-belt done, and I have the tools for the 2.8, I think the 2.7 is different correct?? I have never owned a 2.7t but had several 2.8's and I know it well, any real plus's or minus's between the 2 cars? the

thanks

2.7t is the ultimate tinkerer's car due to its power potential with upgraded turbos... it is however a relatively costly upgrade given the cost of used vehicle. Also, above 100k miles the factory turbos might go any minute so you are potentially facing that cost anyway.

Upgrading or replacing turbos is $1500+ affairs in just parts, labor would cost about 2k...

If you're looking for reliability, take 2.8.

Thanks.

simple answer - fast vs slow.

Better answer - fast, btu requires more maint (turbos!) vs slow but fairly simple.

The 2.7t is a great motor. Solid, powerful, and easy to tune. Decent economy too. Of course, misused turbos can be a big expensive repair. Hard to tell on a junker. If the 2.7 is an auto, keep in mind that the tranny was borderline for the torque. Beware. If its an MT - case closed.

I have no clue why KBB lists the value lower. Maybe on old cars the prospect of a $5k dual turbo job lowers value.

on KBB that was what I was thinking, at 120k it could be due for not only T-belt but also potential turbo's although I know turbo's can also go for a easy 200k, or let loose at any time! what worries me is this car belongs to a 22yr old collage girl who can't afford to fix it at this point, she claims the dealer has done any work on the car but oil changes on a Audi are important, and on a turbo car Real important!!
so given the extra 6hrs of drive time for pick up I will likely go grab the 99 2.8 locally. It's not that I need a car I just can't help myself when I see them cheap!

Well picked up my next project today, I think Audi #8 I went for the 99 2.8, 120k good condition except the guy parked too close to a curb, almost pulled the bumper cover off the car when he backed up, so it needs some minor paint repair, and it has no power steering and of course the normal valve cover leaks. I will do the t-belt as well since I have no service records on the car. but for $1500 a really nice car! I am passing down my 99 A4 to a friends daughter this weekend I may actually miss that car.

if the 2.7 was silver I would have taken it, but it was charcoal, nice color but I prefer the easy to clean colors!!!! and actually the 99 I got looks to be a great car, better then I thought!

I picked the 2.8 because it was simpler, cheaper to maintain (parts), easier to find and had a cheaper price of admission.

There are times I wish I had more power, but lets be honest, you rarely use it. In my case, if I want something faster I drive a different car.

Just catching up to this thread now so i am a day late an a dolar short . Being the owner of 2 2.8litre Audis I would have recomended the 2.7T. the 2.8 12v in my Audi 90 is a wonderfull engine , the 90 is a light nimble and very enjoyable car ( 5spd) It is tonnes of fun t drive.
In the A6 i find the 2.8 not nearly powerfull enough for such a large and heavy car. it is the 30V but it is still more of a lumbering car than my 90. To do again I would have gone for the 2.7T . of course I do all my own work too so that may be a factor for you ..
