Default 2000 2.8 V6 - stuttering under light throttle

I've recently bought a 2000 A6 2.8 V6 Quattro tiptronic with 80,000 miles on the clock - stock as far as I can see.

Test drive was fine but over the past 400 miles it has developed a stutter / hesitation (momentary loss of power, like when you start to run out of fuel) under light throttle and sometimes at idle. Under heavy acceleration or higher engine speed (>3000rpm?) everything seems fine. The problem seems to be getting worse.

I've hooked it up to VAGCOM to check for fault codes (thought it was misfiring) but nothing amiss there. Have realigned throttle body, added fuel supplement to clean the injectors and tried 98RON fuel, but nothing makes a difference.

Can I use VAGCOM to help diagnose this problem, and does anyone have any ideas what to try next? I could replace fuel filter and plugs (it has been sitting a few months so there could possibly have been some water in the fuel - but I would expect that to clear?), but before spending money I'd like to try to diagnose the problem.

Many thanks in advance.

Default

I would start by replacing the plugs.

Default My A4 had that problem. You could stand on the pedal, and it would just go

ERR ERR ERR and accelerate like a snail. I'm sorry to say though, I never figured out what caused it. Luckily it didn't happen on a regular basis.

Default clean the throttle body. use intake valve cleaner, jectron? or techrolene.

throttle body might be filthified with PCV sludge. Intake valves probably deposited.

Plugs yes, if they're over 30K miles. See the tech article, you can change plugs yourself.

Default Couple o' reasons.

Cheap, unreliable, easy to replace, causes a variety of issues, rarely throws a code.

Default Seafoam the intake

I have only done this once - today. My 2.7T was idling very rough and I checked everything, cleaned the MAF, TB, moved coils, injectors, etc. Then a leak-down test showed intake valves sticking on one cylinder because of carbon build-up. Not wanting to pull the head if I could help it, I Seafoamed the intake and believe it or not my idle is smooth as silk now. I have a misfire code that I think will disappear now because it is running perfectly. Best $7 I have spent in a while!

Default Sensor tells ECU that the engine is running warmer or cooler than it actually is.

ECU leans out or richens up the fuel mixture which can cause funky behavior.
