I'm traveling in Colorado and last night out of now where I hear this banging noise coming from the mid to rear section of the car from underneth the car. It only occurs in the first few seconds, 3 or 4 bangs like someone is hitting the trans or axle with a wrench, then it stops. This happened about 4-5 times each time I started from a stop, then it quit. No performance problems.

STFA and couldn't find anything related. Anyone experience anything like this? Car has 103k on it and I'm aware of the problems with the 4.2 auto, but this is my first indication that anything is wrong. No noise in reverse gear.

Have you checked the engine/trans mounts? I'd check for issues with the center driveshaft as well.
