2000 A6 2.8 Camshaft Adjusters

How much effort should it take to compress the adjuster?

Not too much, basically the tool is plastic if I recall.

You might have a internally stuck adjuster and this issue has been discussed quite a few times in the forums, search it out

And from the way I understand it you are not trying to compress the tensioner as much as keeping it from expanding. Sort of trapping it.
