Your problem has nothing to do with any immobilized or battery in the key. The starter is not functioning or not getting power.
Start with the basics. Is there power to starter solenoid when you turn the key to the start position? If no, replace the starter. If not, start checking the ignition switch, shift lock and other stuff.
I think you shaking the column was coincidence and unrelated, but if you feel strongly that it was related, you could always take a gamble and buy an ignition switch. Don't bother installing it; just unplug the harness from the current switch in the column and plug in the new switch. Turn it with a screwdriver and see if it starts.

Why not start a new thread for this instead of dragging out one that is two years old?
Given the info that you provided, I'm going to guess that you have a bad ignition switch and you just burned up the new starter.

Sorry but since the problem was the same, and your responses seemed to be the most intelligent, I just grabbed it. Would a new starter start the car (once or twice) even if the ignition was bad?

i think he he is saying the ignition switch didnt retract and kept your starter engaged on the staarter ring instead of realeasing with you let go of the key .. this will burn up your starter ...

Thank you guys! That seems to have been the problem. Switched out the ignition switch today - quick 30 min job and we didn't even have to take off the steering wheel as suggested on a step-by-step instruction I found on another forum. My new started and alternator are still working so I consider myself lucky. As a plus, it seems to have fixed my temp gauge as well
