so how do you know you got ripped off? Once the dealer called you, did you then even CALL

Did you read what I already wrote? On the day I had to make a yes/no decision about the repair, my mechanic was closed and therefore not available to give me comparison pricing relative to the dealer's estimate.
And who's whining? I've simlpy asked others' opinions about whether I got ripped off or not because the charge seemed high to me and I was curious. Thanks to the comments posted, I've learned that the job is more complicated than one might assume, my dealer probably has a high labor rate, and that I may have been overcharged for coolant. That's all been very helpful and I'll have a better idea what to say when it's time for the post-visit telephone survey call.

In addition, the repair happened the day after thanksgiving, which was 10 days ago.
if you were so outraged, how come you didn't call anyone last week to check it out?

Labor manuals.
Alot of times those manuals are typially wrong. I'm pretty sure Audi warranty time is more than 3.1 hours. If they did the timing belt and that too I'd say 5 is fair. But just for the T-stat I'd say that's high.
