Is there any room in our budget for a later model year??? The only reason I ask is becuase in 2002, they added a couple of nice features such as a CD changer in the headunit, steering wheel controls for tiptronic shifting, exposed exhaust tips, bi-xenon headlamps, and thicker/quieter glass. There are a few more things, but those are the things that come to mind quickly.

Thanks everyone for your comments and feedback, all very helpful indeed in making my decision up for me. I think I've found the one and will likely buy it tomorrow. I will definitely post with pics once I become an Audi owner.
Cheers!

2000 A6 4.2
I bought my 2000 A6 4.2 new. It now has just under 62,000 miles on it. It was love at first drive on this long sweeping freeway on ramp. Owning my A6 has been a love-hate relationship. The following are the repairs that have been done: Cam seals, transmission control module (warranty), stuck thermostat replaced (timing belt and water pump done at the same time) all 4 window lifts have been replaced, drives side window switch replaced.
Things that need to be done are: needs new front control arm bushings, the rear oil pan seal seeps (has been like this since 30,000 no guarantee it won't seep again after it is repaired) front seat reclining motor needs replacement, has a interior lighting control problem, may affect locking also, LED display unreadable when it's hot outside, 1 window lift needs replacement again.
I have never had any brake problems or major engine problems. It's all of the little things that drive me crazy and cost so much to repair. I wouldn't trade her for anything.

I have a 01 A6 4.2 and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I never had problems with it. After looking at many sites and talking with many Audi owners and mechanics I find that the 4.2L is the most reliable motor between the 2.7T, 2.8 V6, and 3.0... Strong motor that gets me 19mpg city/30.3mpg hwy average and looking at V8 now can barely manage 16cty/22hwy
I love the fender fares, its design is amazing. I'd choose a C5 design over a C6.. C6 looks too round. The interior on a C6 doesn't impress me either. I say go for it... Just maintain it do its flushes and oil changes. I kept up with a 335i with my stock 4.2L but than that little 335i rocket takes me from 60mph up.

I own a 2001 A6 4.2 and it has been the best car I have owned to date. The performance and power is amazing. I work at a Audi dealer so I see the good and bad, while the 2.7 is more common the power and road feel of a 4.2 is like no other. The common concerns are Catalytic converters, o2 sensors and vacum hoses to the seconday air system. I will say my car has 154k and is awesome, im about to list it in the classifieds as I have found a S6 to step up to. Good luck with your purchase.

4.2 maintenance
Plan for timing belt replacements every 60K miles. That's the single biggest ordinary item. High quality parts and service are expensive.
My best idea for saving on maintenance is to spend extra time and money when buying your car. Buy only the most perfect example and compulsively maintain it. They really are great cars. Good Luck.

Hi everyone, I'm back finally, sorry for the extended delay. We had to replace both our vehicles so the first one we got was a Grand Cherokee for the wife. I finally got around to replacing my vehicle and found a 2000 A6 4.2L, black on black with just over 200K. All service records with it and was properly maintained at an Audi dealership. Timing belt/water pump/tensioner/serpentine done, cats done, upper control arms done, and a bunch of other things done too. Its in great shape and pulls like crazy...I love it. So the Jeeps transfer case gives up the ghost a week ago, my wife starts driving the 4.2 and now she wants it! I can't seem to win!!! Matbe time for a S^ for me now)!
Anyway, I'll post some pics of it once winter clears, I bought some A8 12 spoke 19" rims for it and have just ordered the 20mm spacers for them to fit. Should look awesome with them mounted.
Thanks again everyone for chiming in, not sure I would have picked one up without the positive feedback on this thread!
Cheers!
