Default 2000 A6 4.2 Turbo

Hello everyone,
I am a student in the motorsports program at UNC Charlotte . I have a senior design project and was considering turbo charging my 2000 audi a6 4.2. It would be similar to a STS setup with a remote mount turbo, possibly where the OEM mufflers are mounted. I am trying to do some research to see if this would be possible. Is it possible to tune the stock ECM to work with a turbo? I do not know of any tuning software available. Are there any aftermarket companies that could custom program an Audi ECU? Any information or ideas would be helpful. Thank You

Default I originally thought about doing that. The bottom of a C5 is essentially "flat" though, so

the charge pipes would be visible/exposed to debris from the road (especially if you have a lowered car like mine.) The stock mufflers are quite large though, so they leave some nice cavities for a twin-turbo setup.

Default Why not just do it 'correctly' and put the turbos on the manifolds?

Then, use a piggyback or standalone engine management..

I agree with you on mounting the turbos to the manifold. I thought it would be easier to do a rear mount though. What piggyback ECU would you recommend?

Default Rear mount is the least efficent way possible. You want to capture the most heat energy you can.....

There are a number of possible ways to tune the car to run with turbos. I'd start by contacting joe@axismotorport.com, he's an 034 dealer, and very knowledgeable.

Default It also creates a lot more heat. The output charge is hotter, and the underhood

temps are raised. Not to mention the fact that you have a hot turbo sitting on either side of the trans. Some have suggested that the aforementioned placement of the turbos is a factor in the crappy reliability of the RS6's transmission. There is nothing wrong with a remote setup, short of the fact that you have to route pipes under the car.

Default Of course it does. Any turbo will create heat, regardless of where it's placed.

If you stick it at the end of the car, you then have to push air all the way back up to the front.. You're telling me that the boost response would be worth the effort? You'd be talking 8 FEET of pipe just to get the charge air to the intake. Pressure drop much? And honestly, how much energy will the exhaust have by the time it passes through 4 cats, and some mufflers?

As for the heat of the turbos cooking RS6 transmissions, that's a possibility, but why then don't 2.7ts with Tips have the same problems?

They probably make just as much heat as the RS6 does.

Default Nah... if you use 3/4" pipe, the pressure would build quickly..
