I have dead pixel and found one with all pixels working and wanted to know if this would be a straight swap. Mileage matching is the last of my concerns

The fitment will fit,
but different pins , you will need to rewire all the harness wire to match 2001 cluster pins. the middle connector which is different between 98 and 2001 will need to rewired as well lot of work,
best way is to get your cluster repaired, less headache.

i just replaced the cluster on my 2000 A6 2.7. Sent the original in to BBA Remanufacturing in Taunton Mass. took a week overall for send/return. Everything works great - pretty simple procedure. $320 plus shipping.
