Default 2001 A6 4.2L transmission problem...

I bought a 2001 A6 with 4.2L (80 K miles). the transmission goes into limp mode with P0730 code (incorrect gear ratio). The dealer (useless) scanned it and they think its internal issue such as the clutch, shaft or drum. I am not sure which way to go about this either rebuilding the tranny or replacing it with a used one. cost will be the same but I am not too confident with the rebuilders. Does anyone know of a common problem with the transmissions so I would may have the same issue with a used one? Any commets would be appreciated. Thanks

Check the passenger side back seat floor carpet for water (under front passenger side seat) Some A6's have issues w water drainage/leaking and the tranny control unit us under the seatunder the floor carpet and can actualy get submerged in water causing malfuction and eventual failure.

Default This happened to my daughter's B5

I pulled the carpet up on the passenger side and the module was completely submerged. I dried it out and baked it in the oven at 150 deg for a couple of hours to completely dry it out. Works fine now.

Murph, if ya can not figure where and how to stop the water intrusion, you will want to drill a small hole in the body from inside underneath the tranny CU to let water drain out. if it was flooded it WILL flood again. I checked air cabin filter housing gasket (one between filter housing and body)for leaks, repair w auto silicon caulk type sealer, check and clear sun-roof drains, cheak and clear water drains underneath battery....
