Default 2002 Audi A6 2.7T stalls - seeking advice

Hi everyone,

Forgive me ahead of time for making this my 1st post. I am seeking some advise about my problem. I am not savvy at all about cars and don't know all the terminology.

I currently have a 2002 Audi A6 2.7T which is 100% stock. I am of a certain age and use the car to commute from home to work and weekend getaways.

This week, on my way to the supermarket, the car stalls while I was driving. The steering wheel jammed, could not turn left not right. I put it on neutral and was able to pull aside slowly.

I removed the key and tried to turn on the engine but it would not start. I had power everywhere (windows, radio, ventilation, etc) but engine would not start. Something turns when I turn on the key but the engine will not "ignite".

I called AAA and just about when the car was hooked to be towed, I tried to turn on the engine and it worked. I thought my problems were resolved.

The next day, it did the same thing. I was on the highway at night, exiting through an on-ramp and the car stalled again. Steering wheel jammed. This time, I almost hit the wall. Had it towed to my house and once on the ground, car started fine.

I brought it today to a mechanic friend who specializes on European car but there was no fault code on his screen. Everything seems perfectly fine. I stayed at his shop for half the day in the hope to find the problem but we could not.

I would like to know if anyone here has a clue on the nature of the problem. I would greatly appreciate the feedback and opinions.

Best regards,

Bastian

If no codes, I'd start by replacing the fuel pump.

Makes sense, I will look into it when back at the shop tomorrow.

Thank you

Fuel pump is not the problem ... taking it to the dealer tomorrow, can't waste more time on it.

Update:

Took to dealer today. Problem was "crank shaft sensor". $900 with labor. Ouch.

Odd that it didn't throw a code. But thanks for the info. $900 is still a pretty good deal when you realize that a new car that's as nice will set you back tens of thousands.

Every time you fix something and share the knowledge, the rest of us grow richer.

Thanks.

I'm guessing that it had an intermittent code that the mechanic did not find with a generic scanner.

I just replaced the crank sensor in the sister-in-law's ride. $40 and 1.5 hours. Must be a lot more plumbing in the 2.7?

$900 seems extremely pricey. Ouch. :-(

Glad to share.

Yes, $900 is very expensive. Apparently the part itself is something like $100.

But that's what you get when you live in (retarded) Canada and bring it to the dealer.

Car will be ready tomorrow morning.

actually there is a lot of removal parts involved and all work is done based on feel and touch, the space is very tight to operate within so it goes back to are you being bent over, no is my answer.
