Local dealer has cpo 2002 a6 avant with 17K miles for a good price but Consumer Reports doesn't like the A6 from a reliability perspective(not sure if they have just reviewed the sedan or the sedan and the wagon). I have a 1994 Saab 9000CS which has required a fair amount of maintenance recently so looking for more reliable car. Can anyone give me a sense for how reliable the a6 avant line has been and specifically the 2002's? I know Audi redesigns their cars every couple years-was the 2002 the first year of a new model(and hence might have more problems)? Lastly I heard 1 nightmare about an A4 owner whose certified pre-owned car needed a lot of engine work that the dealer kept saying wasn't covered by cpo warranty. Does the choice of dealer determine what work will be covered by cpo warranty (so that some dealers are better than others?) or do I need to read the fineprint very carefully to know what is covered and what isn't?

this one will have the remainder of the factory warranty (4 years/50K). I would find out when the car was originally delivered/purchased. If was purchased in March 2002, then you have like three months of factory/dealer warranty coverage.
do a search on this forum for CPO coverage etc.
See my sig for potential "upgrades".
Good luck.

$25,995 but a website said $23,995 so maybe I can get it a bit cheaper. Does that sound right? Salesperson said it is $3,000 extra to make a car certified pre-owned and edmunds I think said non-certified was about $22K.

Audi maniacs do not buy these cars for their reliability. We buy them for their oustanding character, design, performance, and "soul."
Lexus and Acura are good for performance and reliability. However "Soul" is a big question mark.

Pretty good endorsement.
As far a reliability it is pretty rock solid. Some small stuff can fail but it will not leave you stranded.
My '01 4.2 has been very reliable.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/45563/img_0970e.jpg"></center><p>our avant has been perfect...02 w/ only 13K miles on it. No problems, except rotors tend to warp easily.
of course you should read the fine print.
Coming from a Saab 9000, an A6 Avant is a big upgrade.

in the same way you would any used car purchase plus a call to AoA to get any history they have on the car. How much time is left on the Original Waranty? ie 4 years from date of first title.
But the car is good, change the oil, take care of it and it will do fine.

I assume you mean Audi of America (AoA)? I guess I can get their # through the local dealer or is there another part of Audi of America I should call for history on the car? Sometime in 2006, the original warranty will go out (need to clarify when) so very little time left on that. Salesman said he would check car thoroughly right before original warranty goes out and put through all necessary repairs so wouldn't have big expenses for a while but not sure I believe that.
