Default 2002 S6 4.2L Oil change procedure?

Hey guys,

Looking for the oil change procedure for a 2002 Audi S6 Avant 4.2L. Every oil change place wants to rip me off for $110.00+ and I can buy the filter and oil for around $60.00.

Thanks.

I do mine like this.
Front of car up on two jacks, put jackstands under front suspension for safety.
Remove belly pan.
Drain oil..use pan that can hold 10 qts. Take off oil filler cap...drains faster.
Alternatively you can use a vacuum sucker to remove the oil thru the dipstick but you still have to go under to remove oil fitter.
Remove oil filter...it comes out hole end first and down.
Wet the gasket on the new filter before you install it. Don't try filling the filter with oil..it will spill and make a mess
Replace the drain plug!
Fill with oil to full mark on dipstick..about 6.5 liters.
Replace filler cap!
Start engine, idle till oil pressure light goes out... Check for leaks!.
Stop engine...check dipstick for oil level, adjust/add as necessary.

Replace belly pan.

Remove jackstands, drop car from jacks, done.

This step is critical. Be sure you do this *before* draining the oil so that you are certain that it is the engine oil that you are draining. Don't pull a quickie lube shop move and drain the trans by accident.

What Sloop says has worked well for me for over 4 years, but you really need to prepare for a big mess when removing the filter. When he says, "hole in first and down" it is important to know how the area around the oil filter is quite limited, and that it's pretty much impossible to fully extract it without the open end of the filter pointing downward.

This is not pretty...even after most of the oil has drained.

Recommend having at least a good six or so sheets of paper towels VERY handy. Heck, I bring at least half a roll out for the occasion. Place many in the area directly under the cavity where the filter is coming off the block. Have 2 - 3 in one hand as you unscrew the filter with the other hand...also right below where the filter parts from the engine.

Was soooo much easier with straight-five 2.2 and 2.3T engines owned in the 80's and 90's. Could just about pull and replace the filter while squating under the front bumper...whole oil/filter change ~20 minutes. Thermostat right on top too, unlike 4.2 location.

Quick question...
I'm about to do oil change on recently acquired 2000 C5 A6 4.2; what else is there to do when I'm waiting for the snow to start??

Next to oil pan on driver side there's a pipe coming from underside of the head.
(approx location of the oil filter on my 98 A4 2.8 since that's what I'm used to)

Is this a coolant drain?

Thanks
Ted
