Thoughts? The only fix is a rebuilt head right? My understanding is you cannot put a cam and new lifter in it. Or is that not correct?

I was hoping this was not the case. Arrgghhh! Oh, I don't see any cam chains in this pic.
I don't see why you cannot put a new cam and new lifterS in? A wiped cam just leaves the valve more or less closed....a new cam and followers should fix the problem. You need new followers because the followers need to wear in to the new cam.

And yep...both cams driven by timing belt.

Well that sucks big time Chris, yep it always seems to be #3 on that side when it's been posted here.

You can just replace the cam and tappet with out pulling the head as I've read actually on this forum if I recall, not an easy job though.

I've helped on a few TB's with these engines and have not seen this cam wear you have, never saw a chain either on them too.

Chris, read the repair description that jcman attached below and then make your decision. It looks like you need some special tools and some really special goop to seal the cam frame to the head. And as a bonus you get to do all this work leaning over with the head at a slant. I guess you could pull the head and work on the bench but even then you need to round up the tools required. Maybe you can make do without them. Not sure.

Good luck.

Default From the golden vault of the past

I present you with this one that has some good info on the timing aspects relative to a tb service without a new belt like in your case.

Thanks JCMAN! If you had the special tools, it would not be overly complicated, but very time consuming. I am wondering what a cam and followers are in $. Going to try and do some research now. Tried calling the nearest dealer today, but they did not return call. Will try again on Monday.

Chris real important tools you would need to do this job is a crank lock pin, cam locks and the cam socket, and alot of time.

Report back, I'll be here as always.

sorry about your loss, but this is all to common in 3L land... a new cam will prob set you back 1K... but worse, dont you need a new head as the caps are ground for that specific head/cam combo :/
