3.0 engine

I currently have a 2001 A4 Avant 2.8. I got the A4 because in the A6 Avant there just wasn't enough power with the 2.8 (but the A4 2.8 is fast enough for me). Now the A6 Avant comes with a 3.0, is it a significant improvement in power? Cant't afford allroad or S6. Why can't they put the 2.7T in the standard A6 Avant?

I cannot compare the 3.0 to the 2.8 engine, since I have never driven the 2.8 engine. The 3 liter engine is pretty peppie and feels stronger than 220 horsepower especially when using trip-tronic shift mode. The Sport mode on the transmission is a great feature ( it holds the upward shift until the engine gets close to the redline ). The two features contribute to a lot of the enjoyment of this car. I do wish I had the power of the V8, and I wish the engine noise was a little more deeper sounding and of course why can't Audi offer a better wheel and tire package. It's a fun car to drive. Good luck

weight reductions makes the 3.0 a very good engine for the Avant.
We drove a '00 Avant before getting a Lexus RX300, and my wife thought it was a slug. The RX300 was a dud, so she ended up getting my 2.7 and I got the 4.2. She drove the 2.7 for about a year, and then we had to get the Avant due to changed family circumstances. Anyway, even though she had been in the 2.7 for a while, she's quite happy with the performance of the 3.0; says it's nothing like the 2.8 Avant---although she of course admits it's nothing like the 2.7, either.
Not as much low-end torque, not as much immediate acceleration, but strong enough to pull and pull fairly fast, even from a standstill. Go drive one; only you can decide if it's powerful enough.

I've got an '01 2.7T I had an '02 3.0 quattro as a loaner, and found it MUCH more powerful than a '98 2.8 I had driven. I still prefer my 2.7T, but the 3.0 sure won't embarrass itself.

...from 0-60mph, according to Car & Driver!!!
I believe it was Car and Driver. The reason I question it, is because I have subscriptions to Car & Driver, AutoWeek and Automoble. It may have been Automobile, but I know it wasn't in AutoWeek. The issue compared about 6 or 7 sedans. Of course they selected BMW first; and Audi was second.
