Greetings!
I am at my wits end and need some advice regarding a coolant leak on my 4.2 AWN motor. I bought my A6 three months ago and it has had a coolant leak ever since. The coolant is leaking from behind the oil pan on the passenger side of the vehicle. I have looked carefully where the leak is coming from and it seams as though it is trickling down from somewhereon the right side of the engine and finding its way to the rear of the oil pan. I was certain that perhaps the water pump/thermostat housing was the culprit, so I took the gamble and replaced the water pump thermostat and timing belt. Well, the leak has not stopped and with the cooler weather is getting worse. I love my car, but am getting scared .......do I have to trade this car in? I hope that someone else has experienced a similar problem and may have some insight. I hope its not a head gasket problem.
I await your replies!

I bet your oil cooler is leaking coolant it is not very common, but it happens. It is behind the alternator, you can barely see it underneath an aluminum housing. You need to replace the cooler, all the seals, and the small plastic extension tube for the oil.

4.2 Bandit was correct.
I removed the oil cooler and found the plastic union pipe to have a crack in it. I replaced the part for 9 bucks and voila..no more red stuff on the ground.
Thanks everyone!

rsd911, I'm hoping you still have this thread tracked...
I emailed you with a question about the procedure.
I'd appreciate a reply if you have a minute. Thanks!
