4.2 Tip mode gremlins - cannot always downshift in tip mode. Is this a
sign of a more serious problem like a tranny failure? Upshifts work great. I just got this beast and love everything about it - traded up from a 2.7T. But what gives with the tempermental tip mode?? Anyone else notice this?

Depends on the revs. From what gear to what gear have you encountered this problem and...
...is it consistant, say from 3 down to 2, or throughout the gears?
I did the tip recode (VAG) and somethimes if the revs are too high, it will not allow you to downshift.

It's not always there. This is what bothers me. I have the 00032 tip code. I can't pin it on
gears- usually 5 to 4 OK but have noticed problems with 4 to 3 or 3 to 2 and minutes later it will work. Really annoying not having it on demand.
