Default My GTI had also problems with grinding in second when I switched to RedLine oil

I switched to Motul and the problem was solved.

It's not a racing tranny or clutch, you're just shifting faster than the parts can disengage.

Default No problemo 1st to 2nd, but..

I can't downshift from 2nd to 1st w/out matching revs. This is definitely due to bad 1-2 syncros that are well known in 00 gear boxes (A6 2.7T's and S4's). When the moment presents itself, I'll try a WOT quick-shift 1-2 and see what happens (normally, I like to see the tack travel through the power band in 2nd alone).

Default There is no "adapting" to oil as you probably already know,

but I can appreciate where your coming from. As long as the fluid you put in is within a reasonable range of the specified weight you should be having no problems. In other words, if you have the correct weight oil in the gear box, there should be no grinding downshifting into second, no matter what. This is assuming a good transmission and a good clutch.
