'97 A6 Steering REALLY STIFF at stand still, what gives?

Default '97 A6 Steering REALLY STIFF at stand still, what gives?
1997 Audi A6 2.8

When I am sitting still, the steering wheel is really stiff, if I give it a little gas it loosens up. Any ideas on what would cause this, or is it normal?

Doesn't sound like it, and it steers great when there is power to the motor. ITs just at idle RPM when its really stiff (I can almost not turn the wheel)

Default Same problem on a 95 S6
Had the same problem. Turns out I had a crack in the steering rack which caused a constant leak of power steering fluid. I have now had 2 steering racks replaced in the last 4 years on my car. LOVE THE CAR - HATE THE RACK!!!

I'll schedule a call to the shop and see if I can't get it covered under warranty (Before my 30 day, 1,000 mile warranty runs up) Doh!

I've heard of several racks going bad on the C4 cars... about $1,000.

rack leak should be obvious (puddle of Pentosin) i'd worry about the pump?
