'98 A6 accelerates automatically: very scary

Hey all,
Hoping someone can help me...today I was driving my car and it suddenly started to accelerate on its own! The car shot forward, and when I hit the brake, it felt like the gas and the brake were being simultaneously pressed.
I pulled over into a parking lot, and put the car in Park. The engine revved really high. I also noticed the gas pedal closer to the floor than normal. Literally like it was stuck while depressed. I shut the engine off and took the key out.
When I re-started, the car seemed fine. I continued to drive, and the same thing happened again after a mile. I played around with the brake, and the problem fixed itself. However, for the next two miles, the car would sometimes shudder (like when you drive over a rumble strip on the side of a highway, but not that exaggerated). I got home two miles later. I'm scared to take it out of the garage again.
What the hell is going on? Is this a transmission problem? Has anyone experienced this before?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
Mike

pedal when they swore they were depressing the brake pedal.
I see it is cold outside, got your big boots on?
You may want to try to make the problem repeatable. I can almost guarantee you will be guilty until proven innocent on this one.
Search the Interent for Audi 5000 unintended acceleration.
