So, I'm trying to figure this one out, but I think this would be a 12v V6, correct? It is a very late 1997 build date by the door pannel, and it is a 98 by tittle/model year. But the Avants were not updated to the C5 chassis till 99, right? or Am I missing this?
Either way, it has some issues, trying to decipher, and helps to know what engine it is. Also, will this one be non-facelifted as well, then?

If it is a 30v it will be twin overhead cam with separate ignition coils for each plug, rather than a block of three twin coils at the front of the engine.
I think some of the last C4 cars had the 30v engine fitted so yours could have that. It is a better engine but has more reliability issues - mainly oil leaks so if it also leaks oil, it is probably a 30v!

1998 A6 sedan is C5
1998 A6 avant is C4
C4 2.8L is 12valves. Yes, 1940s era design...
The changed avants to C5 one year later than sedans... And the 12v engine is the major POS. I used to have 1998 Avant and man, was it really weak or what.

While I like the 30v engine better, the 12v was a pretty bulletproof unit by 1998. Most of the leaks that were common in the early units were addressed. The only thing I really dislike about the 12v is the propensity for the EGR passage to plug up with carbon.

The only plus was ample space under the hood, it was pretty easy to work with... 2.7t is very cramped by comparison.

I would so argue... To start with, the 1998 I had was leaking as much as 2.7t I currently have so in my experience it wasn't bulletproof. It also had like 170hp or something to that respect, very subpar performance. It was also very horrible on fuel economy.

So, based on the coil comment, I'm pretty sure its a 12v. I'll do more looking at it. Also, I would say its a C4 as well, based on the rear tails. The trunk opening latch is in the taillights like on a V8 and etc. The C5 has it in the center, and has smaller tail lights.
Cool, great... should be fun.
