99 A6 2.8 Tranny Issue
I am having some weird issues with the A6 transmission. I am not sure if they are all related.
1.) the Tiptronic feature suddenly stopped working
2.) occasional hard automatic downshifts when coming to a stop
3. Occasional hard shifts from reverse to drive
4. Today the car stayed in 4th on the high way and would not go into 5th
Otherwise the tranny is generally pretty smooth.
Is there an "emergency" or "trouble" mode on this transmission that might explain the no tip/ no 5th gear issue?
Thanks for any help.

Are the PRND432 lit up all as one? If so, it's in 'limp home mode', and should be checked..
there are a large number of reasons. The TCU will store codes, so find a dealer/indy/individual with a scan tool (like VAG COM)..

Limp home mode most likely from communication error between trans
and TCU. This is most often because of moisture getting into the electrical connector at the transmission. Very common.

I have this also. A gearbox specialist has charged me £300 to tell me they can't locate the fault, having changed the "range sensor?" which the ECU said was faulty. A new one reported the same fault, so they put the old one back on. Their next move was ECU replacement(££££).
I am of a mind that its a wiring problem, but where do you start?
I'm happily driving the car as it is, it seems fine apart from the busy engine note on motorways. Upside is acceleration is improved, no waiting for kickdown!!!
Anyone know where I can get wiring schematics, or point me in the direction of likely connectors to check and clean? And do I need something to reset the fault once I've cleaned the connections, or will the fault sort itself out? I presume battery disconnect will do the trick if all else fails.

Did you ever get an answer to this problem? Mine is havign the same problem. Mine happened once before when I tried cleaning out the engine compartment...this time i took it through a car wash and had the under carriage cleaned and it started right after.......does anybody know which electrical connector may get moisture in it to cause the tranny to go into Limp mode
